GHS Championship - Event Preview

Over 150 youngsters line up for Saturday’s GHS 10-mile Championship final at Woodlands St Mary, Berkshire, some hoping to follow in the footsteps of former champions like Chris Boardman, Steve Cummings, Ian Stannard and Alex Dowsett.

The Newbury Road Club promotion, which includes 29 girls, gets underway at 11am with the start east of Shefford Woodlands, about 15 minutes ride from the event headquarters at Woodlands St Mary Village Hall, Ermin Street, RG17 7SL.

As ever it is difficult to pick the medal contenders but a few names stand out from recent performances, James Wood (Catford CC) and James Trott (Bike Chain Ricci) finished seventh and 11th in last weekend’s BTTC Junior’s event while Ollie Wood (Sportscover Altura) will be out to improve on his third place in last season’s GHS final.

Others back from last year’s title race, but a year older, include Declan Davies (CC Breckland), Keira McVitty (Prince William School), second of the girls last year, and Abbey-Mae Parkinson  (RST RT), third in 2011.

The usual strong entry from the Isle of Man will be present with James Dudley looking to lead Team Royal London 360 IOM to another championship team win.
